January 23 - 27 ~~~~~~~ The Mitten and Family Literacy Day

  • Patrick Hogan was our Star of the Week! Congratulations Patrick!

  • Playdough mats - decorate the mittens and make the words from the stories The Mitten and The Hat.  Wonderful activity for fine motor skill development.

    • Creating the story The Mitten -  decorate and cut out the mitten and lace around the outside.  Color and cut out all the characters. Put them inside the mitten.  Now you have your own The Mitten story.  Many outcomes being met with this workjob.  Fine motor skills, creative development, literacy skills, sequencing the story.

  • Mitten Counting - how many n=bears, cubes, shells, cars, blocks will fit in your mitten?  Try each to see how many of each item will fit into your mitten.  Record your findings.  Notice how your mitten stretched just like Nicki’s in the story. Working on counting and number formation in a fun way!

Help Nicki follow the path to his mitten.  Then roll and record to see which character will race to the top. Fine motor and number formation.

  • Our Literacy Popcorn wall …. Lots of good books kept popping up.  Thank you for your support in sending in the popcorn with the name of the book.  The children were getting quite good at retelling the story to their classmates!

  • Wayne Tumblin former teacher from Miscouche was in to read to our class and the grade two class together.  The children all received a cup of popcorn as they listened to Wayne read a few stories.  The student from both classes were very attentive as Wayne read.  Thanks Wayne!

  • We were invited along with grade one to Mrs. Martin’s grade seven classroom to  create a boat by following the directions. Literacy and fun together in this activity.  We ended up with boats and hats!

  • I brought in some sheets and created some tents/tunnels for cozy literacy areas.  The children thought this was awesome!  Lots of book sharing and giggles during literacy time!

  • Here we are in our cozy PJ’s in front of our literacy display!  Literacy is everywhere!  Take some time everyday to do some literacy activities with your child.

Scarlett was our first Star of the Week!  Congratulations Scarlett!

Our Family Literacy Day Project “ Good Books Keep Popping Up” is growing each day please continue to read a good book and record it on the popcorn to go on our display!

Patrick celebrated his 6th Birthday!  Happy Birthday Patrick!

Our workjobs continued from last week.  Choose a domino, record the number of dots on your domino. Count the dots and record that number.

Shake the snowman sight word cubes.  Say and record the sight words. If you do not recognize the word ask a friend.

Snowflake art - color, cut out, add details and glue together.

Snowball sight words - Pick a snowball, say and record the sight word.

We have been working on 3D shapes.  Each student was given some cubes and asked to make an Inuksuk resembling the one in our Math Makes Sense book.
Each Inuksuk looks a little different. The children did an awesome job of building them.

Some fine motor activities.  Each table had a different activity on it and we did a rotation so every student had a turn at each table.

Our finished snowflake art!

Mr. Snowman.  Each child had a part of the snowman and as we sang a song about the part they placed it on the snowman.  When the snowman was completed.  We played game of what part was missing.  The children did really well at knowing what part was missing and what color it was.  This was a good activity to work on observation skills.

Some learning centre activities.  The sandbox was open this week and the painting centre as well.  Both learning centre activities were busy each learning centre time.
