June 5 - 9 ~~~ Week #1 of our Pirate Theme

Our display table … the children enjoyed decorating the table with my pirate theme items.

Day 1 … the outline of the pirate ship is ready to begin it’s transformation throughout the next few weeks of school.

Clipboard cruising for our sight words written on treasure chests.  When you are finished turn your sheet over and draw a pirate ship.

Roll and Graph which pirate picture will race to the finish?

Pirate puzzles using numbers 1-10  and 11- 20.  Also some clothespin clipping ~ count the number of items on the card, clip the clothespin on the correct number.  Let Mrs. D., check your work.

Pirate playdough mats, creating gold coins, coconuts, parrots, sharks and Jolly Roger Flags with playdough.

Our pirate ship at the end of week #1. It has tissue paper water and the children all participated in painting a part of the ship.  I painted the flags as they were up high.

Creating our own pirate masks.  Lots of color and cooperation going on here.  The children helped each other cut out the eye opening. I put elastics on the back and we went to visit a few classrooms and sang our Pirate song … What Do You Do With A Lazy Pirate?

Mrs. Dickieson was back to visit.  Lesia Holmes is retiring and your children created a book for her of all the things it is OK to do when she retires.  Mrs. Dickieson read the book OK by Amy Krouse Rosenthan prior to the children drawing and writing what it will be OK for Leisa to do after retiring. The pictures involved, camping, golfing, eating cake and ice cream to name a few of the ideas.

A few learning centre time pictures!  The pirate display items are a huge hit.  The children are enjoying pretending to be pirates!!!

We all had a turn to “Walk the Plank” we were careful not to fall in the ocean with the sharks!!!

Before home we went outside a few minutes early and had a game of Duck Duck Goose where we had lots of room to run.

May 29 - June 1 ~~~~ Frogs and Butterflies!

Frogs, bugs, a long and a pond.  Collect a combination of ten frogs and bugs. Turn a number card over.  Example # 8 is turned over this student decided to put 4 frogs on the log and 4 frogs in the pond.  Learning that 4 and 4 make 8.

Roll and build.  Roll two dice count the dots, put that many cubes together, find that number on you card and place the tower that number.Counting to determine how many are in a number and number recognition.

Designing your own artistic butterfly!  First color to decorate, cut out and put together.  Lots of beautiful colorful butterflies!

Butterfly symmetry - Look at the design on one wing of the butterfly and see if you can make the other wing look the same.  This can be quite difficult to do.  Many times the colors and shapes are correct but they are not in the correct place on the wing.

Our Class Timeline -  We looked at many of the different things that have occurred this year.  When you look at it at a glance … it shows how busy we have been.  We discussed what we had worked on and then I asked the students to choose one event and write about it in writer’s workshop.  It was very interesting to see who wrote about what event.  The students asked if they could go to the timeline to see the words to write.

We planted some Scarlet Runner bean seeds when they are up  I will send them home.  Just cut the bottom out of the cup and plant.  Plant it by a pole and it will climb up it and you will have some beautiful Scarlet flowers!

Susan Rankin from the Dept of Forestry was in and did an amazing presentation for/with the students.  She had an actual stuffed beaver and had a river, pond, and branches to dam off the pretend water and the children helped to make the beaver’s den.  She also gave each child a nickel with the beaver on it!

A few pictures from learning centre time.

The Spring Concert!!!  Your children did an amazing job of singing.  I was very proud of my class!

May 15 - 19 ~~~~ Goldilocks and The Three Bears continues

Our Goldilocks and The Three Bears hallway display.  Lots of fun learning happening here, from creative art, to numbers- more, less, almost the same as, literacy with guided writing.

Guided writing the students wrote a letter to the three bears from Goldilocks.

We were using the whiteboards for literacy and math. I decided we should do a listen and draw activity.  The cows and cats turned out really well!

Our last two groups to act out Goldilocks and The Three Bears.  Lots of different voice tones were used.

Some outdoor recess pictures!

Mother’s Day or a family day card.  Each child wanted to make a card to give to someone in their family.

Alex celebrated her 6th birthday.  Happy Birthday Alex!

Chenoa is our final Star of the Week! Congratulations Chenoa!

Carleigh arrived with new sunglasses!  They look awesome!

Merie was in from Island Waste Watch Corporation.  She did a wonderful job of her presentation.  The students now know if the clothing they are wearing is stretchy chances are that they are made from recycled plastic bottles.  They thought it was quite funny that they were actually wearing water bottles.

Concept of spoken word we used an overhead projector and as a student said a sentence they pushed up a bingo marker for each word they as they said the word.  Words like wonderful are tricky as sometimes a student would push up 3 bingo markers as they said the word slowly.

Some learning centre fun activities!

Nevaeh K., brought in a book to read to the class.  She did a wonderful job of learning … great expression and very fluent.
